Last year, Pope County High School founded a new student-led civics organization called Hometown Heroes. These students aim to make improvements throughout the community by taking part in their local bodies of government. The previous group worked with the Golconda City Council to clean up the waterways of Pope County by adding trash cans along the levee.
Just like last year, PCHS freshmen and seniors will be working together on a community improvement project. The Hometown Heroes are excited to announce that this year’s project focuses on the Eddyville area. They are hoping to build Pirate Park in the Village of Eddyville by improving the already existing basketball goals and adding benches and playground equipment. These students want to promote outdoor recreation and imaginative play for children. Thus, they would like to brighten up the area and turn it into a fun place for kids and adults to enjoy together. They plan to work with Legacy Oaks Group out of Marion, Illinois, to develop the park layout. Legacy Oaks Group will then construct the custom playground pieces in their workshop, install it on site in Eddyville, and will subcontract out any additional needs for the new recreational area.
As with last year, the Hometown Heroes would like to involve and support local businesses and individuals throughout this process as much as possible. To accomplish this task they need donations to fund the different components of this project. If you are interested in helping them with this endeavor, please pick up a donation form at the Herald Enterprise, Dari-Barr, or PCHS. Also, be on the on the lookout for their upcoming GoFundMe campaign online.
